2008 ICT Workshop on
Intelligent Lifelong Learning Companions

Hosted by the Institute for Creative Technologies
at the University of Southern California.

(Thu. and Fri.) October 2-3, 2008

Welcome

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers and educators to discuss the vision of building intelligent agents who can act as lifelong learning companions.  Invited talks and discussions will address both the empirical/psychological issues of human learning and technological advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and intelligent tutoring systems (ITS).(this is continued in the workshop overview)

The Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) at the University of Southern California is a university affiliated research center (UARC) funded by the U.S. Army.  ICT conducts research in artificial intelligence, computer graphics, virtual reality, serious games, intelligent tutoring systems, natural language processing, virtual humans, and more.  ICT is located in Marina del Rey, California, U.S.A., two blocks from the marina, three blocks from the Information Sciences Institute, and 5 miles south of Santa Monica.

  • (10/7) I'm writing up my thoughts on the workshop and will post them when ready... if you engage in any reflective practice and write down your thoughts, it would be great if you could share them.
  • (10/6) I've posted most of the presentations now (on the agenda page).  There is also some new stuff on the materials page.  I'll send out an email when it's mostly complete.
  • (10/1) Added a few last minute attendees.  Also, things kick off tomorrow at 9am, but please feel free to come earlier for breakfast and showing of ICT's movie at 8:45.
  • (9/29) If you haven't read The Diamond Age, it isn't too late!  We'll spend a good deal of time talking about it, so it's worth a read on the plane. I found this short summary of some examples of its interactions with Nell.
  • (9/29) More agenda changes have been made.  I've also sent out information about the working groups (see materials for an overview of those).
  • (9/29) The restaurants are now identified on the agenda.
  • (9/25) Some agenda updates have been made.  I may still switch a few things around for coherence of the schedule... or not.
  • (9/11) The schedule has been set (on the agenda). Some titles and abstracts are TBD and will be posted as soon as they arrive.  Details regarding the working groups are being worked out.
  • (9/11) We are also making dinner plans for Thursday and Friday evenings - if you can't attend these and please let us know (if you haven't already).  Thanks.
  • (7/23) The attendee list has been updated again and we are preparing the specific plans for the workshop. Also, travel information was recently sent - please make your travel arrangements at your earliest convenience.
  • (6/29) The attendee list is now available - we're still waiting on a few more responses.
  • (6/22) We have decided to push the workshop back to October 2-3.
  • (6/9) You might be interested in seeing our previous workshop on on intelligent tutoring in serious games, held in August of 2006.
